Lakes Deer Fest starts long before October
Across the summer, we’re inviting people of all ages to help shape the festival itself. Join artists, musicians, storytellers and wildlife specialists to create new folklore, community artwork, original music and performances inspired by Cumbria’s deer and landscapes.

CREATING NEW FOLKLORE
Saturday 15th August, 10am – 4pm
The Spinning Barn, Wild Haweswater
Explore the contemporary Cumbrian landscape, wildlife and deer management through the lens of traditional folklore.
Collaborate and create with our artist in residence, Rachel Shore, and develop a new folk story which celebrates the native wildlife and delves into the need to restore natural balance in the environment.

ARTISTIC EXPERIMENTS
Now we’ve written our new folklore, let’s illustrate it!
We will begin to think about how
best to bring our new folktale to life in the form of an art installation to be displayed
at Lakes Deer Fest.
Within these sessions we will review the story, think about design and experiment with a
range of artistic techniques with a focus on using sustainable materials.

SONG OF THE DEER – SONGWRITING WORKSHOPS

Be part of a new performance created especially for Lakes Deer Fest.
Follow the deer into the myths and meanings of the wild places of Cumbria. Written and performed by young people working with BlueJam Arts, this uplifting blend of music and poetry celebrates the landscapes, wildlife and stories that connect us to Cumbria’s deer.
Inspired by the sounds of wind, water, forest and fell, this unique performance offers a fresh and creative perspective on the Lake District and its iconic wildlife.
STREET BEATS PARADE WORKSHOPS
September 29th & October 6th, 4-6pm
Blue Jam Arts Space, Friargate, Penrith CA11
Join Street Beats and help create the music for the Lakes Deer Fest parade through Rheged.
We have two free sessions at BlueJam Arts Space, Friargate, Penrith CA11, where we will be creating some new drum beats to combine with sounds of wind, water, forest and fell to feed the imagination and (bring the deer home). We will also be writing a chorus of voices for anyone to join in with to ring through the space.
All ages welcome.
You can also join in on the day of Lakes Deer Fest (10th October)!
DESIGN THE PARADE WEEKEND WORKSHOPS
